How building codes stack up against tropical weather:
Property damage from severe weather grows into the billions of dollars when a major threat hits land, and Florida’s building codes are a good example of how it’s important to continually evolve for better protection against winds, debris, and flooding.
An active hurricane season can reveal risks for building and home owners, and ultimately on the local economy as a whole. A study done for the found that losses when Hurricane Andrew hit Florida, for example, it caused more than $20 billion in insured damage of which 50% could have been avoided for residential properties and 40% for commercial properties if those structures were built in accordance with Florida’s 2004 statewide building code.
Keeping these building code implications in mind, let’s look a bit more closely at the remainder of the 2019 season. As the oceans warm this season so will the number of hurricanes, and potentially the intensity level. Associated storm surges pose a particular risk to low-lying coastal cities due to the higher sea levels associated with the expansion of warmer ocean waters. In addition, intense, extra-tropical storms, such as Superstorm Sandy, which hit the U.S.
