Black Panther: Wakanda Forever costume designer explains the process of adapting the Talokanil costumes to an underwater setting in the sequel.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever costume designer explains how underwater filming affected Talokan costumes' design. The final film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 4, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, brings the kingdom of Wakanda back to the big screen as T'Challa 's family grieve his loss and gear up to face a new threat. This threat comes in the form of Namor , who made his MCU debut in the sequel as the leader of the Talokanil people.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While speaking with Variety, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who won an Oscar for her work on the first film, discussed the behind-the-scenes work required to bring the Talokanil people and culture to life. Carter and Black Panther production designer Hannah Beachler became the first Black artists to win Academy Awards in their respective categories.

“We went to the historians and showed them some of the things were looking at. We learned about Spondylus shells and jade. They would use kelp in their costumes. We looked at how they used shells, stone and jade. For the water scenes, we had a 20-foot tank in which we did tests. Divers went down in the water and I had to put them in costumes that included headdresses and capes, just to see what those costumes would do in water, and I ended up putting weights in.

2018's Black Panther allowed MCU fans to delve into a new world, the kingdom of Wakanda. The efforts made to bring the innovative civilization of Wakanda to life involved utilizing research on the various countries, tribes, and cultures that exist within the African continent and incorporating that rich tapestry into the many layers of the film, particularly the costumes. The result was an immersive and breathtaking experience for viewers that set itself apart from many MCU projects.

While the Oscars are still a ways off, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is already the subject of awards buzz, with many acknowledging the talented performances - Angela Bassett's in particular - and the same categories dominated by Black Panther in the 2019 Academy Awards.
