Unlike Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld was totally scripted, but the one time the show went off-script, the series' most iconic monologue was born.
Seinfeld is the most celebrated sitcom of the 90s, but one unplanned monologue not only saved an episode but became one of the most iconic moments of the series. The series was co-created by Larry David, who has become more known for Curb Your Enthusiasm, the profanity-filled HBO comedy series where David plays himself. While Seinfeld is completely scripted, Curb Your Enthusiasm is best known for being completely improvised outside of vague scene descriptions.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT It's no secret that George Costanza is based on David, and a lot of George's actions throughout the series are based on David's real-life stories. Just as George quits his job on Friday but goes to work on Monday as if nothing happened in season 2, episode 7, "The Revenge," Larry David did that in real life when he was a Saturday Night Live writer.
Larry David & Jason Alexander Saved Seinfeld's “The Marine Biologist” Episode "The Marine Biologist" ends with Alexander delivering the famous monologue that starts with "The sea was angry that day, my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli." The scene comes after George had been trying to convince a woman that he was a marine biologist to impress her.
The diner scene was originally Jerry and Kramer wrapping up Kramer's golf story, but it wasn't landing well with the live studio audience, and David quickly decided to change the ending on the spot. Alexander explained, "Larry said, 'How long will it take you to learn a monologue?' And I said, 'How long a monologue?' and he said, 'I dunno, a page and a half.' I said, 'A couple of minutes.' And he had written this monologue...
Why George's "The Marine Biologist" Monologue Works So Well David is clearly at his best under pressure, and Curb Your Enthusiasm has proven that coming up with impromptu dialogue is where David thrives. The monologue sounds like a classic George Costanza outburst, and while it's perfectly written by David, it's also delivered fantastically by Alexander.
