How Olga Naiman turned her Brooklyn apartment into a wonderland of texture and color—including the kids’ rooms.
, and who also has a master’s degree in set design. All of this is obvious the moment you enter her space, a 1,000-square foot two-bedroom in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights neighborhood that she shares with her partner Michael Smith and two kids .
When it came to designing her own home, she applied the same principles she uses on any of her styling or event-design jobs: using reoccurring themes and a narrative that unfolds as you walk through the space. “For me, I like each room to feel different. I don’t like the whole entire house to feel exactly the same. Some people weave the same theme throughout the whole house, but for me, that’s not as interesting,” Naiman explains.
Another recurring theme? Bright patterns. “For me, large monochromatic tones of solid color aren’t interesting. Pattern and texture is what makes a space warm,” says Naiman, who also attributes her love of pattern to her Russian heritage. “I’m Russian. I was born in Russia, and that influences my love of pattern. [Russians] are not minimalist Scandinavians or Swedes that kind of hold back. They hold nothing back. They just jump into everything. They jump into design with full force.
The first thing Naiman did when she got into the apartment was put up the Fornasetti Mediterranea wallpaper and vibrant pink curtains, which began to inform the rest of the space. The jumping-off point for the design in nearly every room in her home was a pattern. In the living room, she fell in love with the blue Matisse-inspired fabric used for her window treatments; from there the rest of the room took shape.
From there, Naiman layered in an eclectic mix of materials that feel unexpectedly balanced—especially within the confines of the apartment’s no-frills architecture. “I love to do the opposite of what the space is,” Naiman explains. “So for a brand-new condo that’s all angles, hard lines, and hard corners without much character to it—it needs an infusion of soul. Pattern and texture is the easiest way to do that.
