With no chance of a structural change or long-term support from the state, the child care industry is getting creative with their hiring woes.

“It’s very clear in this industry that upfront commitment is really hard,” Weinstock said. “Centers are really different. By trying a couple different centers, they can find a fit that saves all of that time and false hope.”Different centers use Tandem in different capacities. A small preschool might use the service for a substitute teacher once or twice a month, while big centers may employe 5-10 workers a week.
There is one downside, in that children haven’t built relationships with new Tandem teachers. But Boddie said Future Scholars employs Tandem workers only as support staff, so kids are always with someone they know. Parents haven’t complained. Tandem is a creative way to stretch child care budgets, Boddie said, but the state subsidies she receives per child “is not cutting it.”
