By the numbers: 100 years at the Houston Zoo
Houston Zoo has come a long way in its 100 year history. For one thing, it has mastered the art of hosting a successful gala.
Honoree Kathrine McGovern shared some of her and late husband John P. McGovern's favorite zoo memories with the Chronicle. "I've met all of the different directors over the years," she added, praising the work of current CEO and president Lee Ehmke, and vice president of development Nick Espinosa."The zoo has really improved — especially the landscape, it's just awesome."
Under the tented Masihara Pavilion, naming rights for a Galápagos tortoise sold for $47,000 in a lively bidding war. In an impromptu move, naming rights for a second tortoise sold for an additional $47,000.
