One of the features in the new Bojangles location, especially for parents, is a hang out area as they wait for the lessons, photographed on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023 in Houston. Parks started the school above Rockin Robbins, but expanded his location after the store cut hours during the COVID pandemic.Bojangles Music School sought some of the best instrumentalists in the city to instruct on the rock ’n’ roll staples like guitar, bass, drums and keyboards.
The two spaces — in Upper Kirby and the Heights — have Bojangles’ instructors in common, as well as painted quotes from musicians like Waits and Alicia Keys that serve as inspiration for the school’s young students. The Bojangles location in Rockin’ Robin has salvaged seats from the Astrodome, a way of connecting two historic Houston institutions.
But Parks and Carroll Parks both point out that while the students will have an opportunity to perform, their goal is to create a bond between young musician and instrument.Adds Carroll Parks, “Sometimes, learning an instrument is just a refuge. Here, a recital isn’t a requirement.”
