Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Clare majored in journalism and international relations at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She worked for her school paper and became editor-in-chief her senior year.In Houston, Sarah has primarily reported on housing, poverty, mental health and religion. She returned to the Chronicle in Oct. 2022 after a stint with ProPublica, where she was an investigative reporter.
Sarah previously investigated sexual abuse and cover-ups in the independent fundamental Baptist movement while at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. She also wrote a piece on mental illness and criminal justice in Mississippi as a fellow at ProPublica. Another story of hers about domestic violence victims in Connecticut getting arrested for calling the police led to a change in the state's law.
