Houston Police Chief Troy Finner speaks during a news conference discussing security planned around the NRA meetings Thursday, May 26, 2022 in Houston. The 2022 NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits are being held this weekend at the George R. Brown Convention Center.Houston Police Chief Troy Finner urged residents to demonstrate responsibly ahead of the planned release of body camera footage Friday of the beating of Tyre Nichols allegedly at the hands of Memphis police officers.
Five fired Memphis police officers were charged with murder Thursday in connection with Nichols’ death, according to the Associated Press. Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said each was responsible in the killing, though they all played different roles. The Memphis Police Department is set to release video of the Jan. 7 traffic stop Friday, according to the Associated Press. Nichols’ family and their attorneys have asserted the video will show officers beating the FedEx worker for three minutes. He died three days later.
“Please know their actions do not reflect the great work the men and women do everyday in our profession,” Finner said. “We ask everyone in our great city to continue to lift up the Nichols family and the Memphis community during a very tragic time.”Representatives for the Houston Police Department declined to comment on the matter beyond Finner’s prepared statement.
