In an attempt to help address the issue of 'arts deserts,' the organization is seeking to diversify the range of children served by its music camps.
“We certainly have a lot of generous community members who want to make sure that that access is expanded,” she says.
HGO is producing both camps in collaboration with the American Festival for the Arts. In the Create an Opera camp, campers get a true look at the art of creation. First they choose a children’s book to adapt, and then help shape every aspect of the production — libretto, sets, costumes, and everything else. They may play multiple roles, too. Dastoor’s daughter attended last year, when the book was “The Wizard of Oz,” and “loved it.
“Every time I go to Kinder, I’m blown away by the level of the talent and also by the kinds of questions they’re asking me: about civic awareness and social justice,” Dastoor said. “These kids are really out to change the world, and a lot of the time they find that their art is the way they're going to do that.”
