Influenza virus is already circulating in Houston, so doctors are recommending flu shots earlier this year.
The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine in the fall, before the height of flu season. After getting the vaccine, it takes about two weeks for the body to develop antibodies that protect against the flu.
“Even if you’re a young, healthy 20-something with no comorbidities, I would say go ahead and get your flu shot,” he said. In the past, doctors have recommended getting a flu shot later – typically in October or early November – because its protection begins to wane in the months after vaccination. One CDC study found that its protection against flu that is severe enough to cause hospitalization, and 10 to 11 percent in older adults. Getting it later increases the chances for robust protection throughout the winter.
