Houston-area players push through to finals at state tournament
Memorial’s Tara Ahmadi and doubles partner Sofia Mazzucato will play for a state championship Wednesday in San Antonio.The Houston area will be well represented in the championship matches at the UIL state tennis tournament Wednesday morning in San Antonio after a solid showing on the first day of competition.
Perhaps the most anticipated final is an all-Houston matchup in Class 6A girls singles action between Tompkins’ Ananya Sriniketh and Catherine Shen from Memorial. Sriniketh will look to become just the second state champion in Tompkins history, joining her older brother, Anish, who accomplished the feat in 2018. Shen, meanwhile, is aiming to become the third Memorial player to win a girls singles title, following in the footsteps of Ann Hulbert and Erin Murphy .
Memorial will also be represented by the girls doubles team of Sofia Mazzucato and Tara Ahmadi, who have sights set on becoming the fifth team from the program to win state. The last Mustangs to accomplish that were Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Drew Morris in 2021. Mazzucato and Ahmadi will take on Anwitha Duduka and Dana Kardonik from Round Rock Westwood in the final match.
The Woodlands’ boys doubles team of Jose Perez and Emilio Lopez will look to secure a title in their third trip to state. That would be a first for the Highlanders’ program. The duo will take on Tejas Ram and Noah Hakim from Allen, who defeated another team from The Woodlands — Eli Sam and Carson Moore — in the semifinals.And then there’s defending Class 5A boys single champion Noey Do, who will take on Alan Gonzalez of Mission Sharyland in the final. Do’s opponent will be a familiar one.
