While Elijah Cummings, as House Oversight chairman, has the ability to investigate “any matter at any time,” the Republicans noted, they believed that seeking information of Trump from when he was a private citizen is not “responsible and legitimate oversight.”
House Republicans on a key committee revealed Wednesday that Democrats are seeking years’ worth of Donald Trump’s private financial records from a point in time prior to him becoming president—and the GOP lawmakers want the inquiry to stop, arguing such a request exceeds the committee's authority.
During his testimony last month to the Oversight Committee, ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen alleged that Trump illegally inflated his net worth by roughly $4 billion in an attempt to obtain a loan from Deutsche Bank and bid on the NFL football team in 2014. The spike in net worth was because of his"brand value," according to financial statements provided to the committee by Cohen, a category absent from his 2011 and 2012 statements.
While Cummings, as chairman, has the ability to investigate “any matter at any time,” the Republicans noted, they believed that seeking information of Trump from when he was a private citizen is not “responsible and legitimate oversight.” In a separate letter to Wahba sent Wednesday, the Republicans said it was their understanding that Cummings was seeking private financial information on Trump as far back as 10 years. They told Wahba, the chairman and CEO of Mazars, that they believe Cumming's inquiry does not have a"valid legislative purpose" and was exceeding the committee's authority.
