George R.R. Martin confirms HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, has officially wrapped filming.
George R.R. Martin has confirmed that HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, has wrapped filming in London. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, began in 1996. Despite HBO’s game-changing adaptation, Game of Thrones, ending in 2019, fans continue to anticipate the novelist’s final two books, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. That being said, both the author and the network are hardly done with Westeros.
Several Game of Thrones prequels have been announced and are in development at HBO. These shows include the working-titled Tales of Dunk and Egg, 9 Voyages, Flea Bottom, and 10,000 ships. The most talked-about spinoff is this year’s House of the Dragon, which is loosely based on Martin’s Fire & Blood, detailing the history of the Targaryen dynasty.
Principal photography for the series began in April 2021 in the United Kingdom but with some elements shot in Spain, California, and Portugal. As Martin notes in his blog post, while filming has wrapped, there’s still plenty of work to do in post-production—from special effects and color timing to its score. House of the Dragon does not have a release date yet. However, the first teaser confirmed it would premiere in 2022.
House of the Dragon’s success will determine the future of Westeros on HBO Max. Following the almost universally adverse reaction to Game of Thrones’ final season, the fandom has lost much of its enthusiasm. Thankfully, House of Dragon appears to have Martin’s stamp of approval—something that can’t necessarily be said about Game of Thrones season 8—and HBO executives are already saying House of the Dragon's quality will likely warrant a season 2.
