Take a closer look at King Viserys’s declining health, Aemond One-Eye’s strong toast, and more details that come straight from the pages of George R.R. Martin’s novel.
In this week’s episode, Vaemond Velaryon makes the mistake of stepping up to a dragon, just as he does in the book. Well, notThere are a few differences between Martin’s take on Vaemond and the HBO adaptation’s depiction of the character, beginning with the fact that in, Vaemond is Corlys’s nephew, not his brother. Then there’s the circumstances surrounding his death.
Here’s where we diverge: in the book, it’s Rhaenyra who directly orders Vaemond’s death in response to these allegations, with Daemon beheading the man and feeding his body to the dragon Syrax. Later, King Viserys orders the removal of Vaemond’s cousins’ tongues, to stop spreading the rumors about Rhaenyra’s children. So, yes, the show’s version of Vaemond’s death was pretty savage, but not quite as bloody as in Martin’s novel.
Suffering from gout, Viserys is described by Martin as “extremely fat and red of face, and scarce had the strength to mount the steps to the Iron Throne.” After ruling against the cousins, Viserys falls from the throne and cuts his left hand open, down to the bone. A deadly fever takes hold, only broken when Rhaenyra joins at his side from Dragonstone, bringing one of her own maesters to remove two of his fingers and stop the spread of infection.
Viserys is obviously in rough shape throughout “Lord of the Tides,” but rather than expanding in size as in the book, the king is shrinking before our very eyes—and even losing one of his own, not unlike his son Aemond once upon a time. Speaking of Aemond…In the book, the feast is held in honor of Viserys’s resurgent health following Rhaenyra’s return from Dragonstone.
