Senate leaders announced an agreement Tuesday that would fund roughly a quarter of President Biden’s Ukraine request.
But some of Ukraine’s backers in Congress downplayed the significance of the Senate’s move to pare back the funding request.On the Senate floor, Majority Leader Charles E. Should temporary funding run out, it would force Congress to take up spending measures again soon. “That gives us enough time to give the people of Ukraine the resources they need when they need it,” Van Hollen added. Biden’s request included $13.1 billion for military assistance to Ukraine, which also would go toward paying for the replenishment of Pentagon weapons stocks that have run low after more than a year of transferring weapons and ammunition to Kyiv.
