BREAKING: House adjourns until Friday night after GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy racks up 14 more votes for speaker
Rep. Kevin McCarthy failed on 13 ballots since Tuesday but managed to win over 14 Republicans as he inches closer to securing the speaker's gavel. With six conservative members of his party continuing to withhold their support — McCarthy can only afford to lose four votes — the GOP moved to adjourn as negotiations continue. The vote passed 220-212.
The only remaining detractors are the most dug-in of the original 20. Thirteen holdouts flipped their support to McCarthy on the 12th ballot Friday. Rep. Andy Harris supported McCarthy on the 13th ballot. The GOP lawmakers who flipped their votes were holding out for more rules changes, while the rest oppose him on more personal grounds. Their votes Friday were split between Reps. Jim Jordan and Kevin Hern on the first ballot Friday before coalescing around Jordan on the second.
