Opinion: Hotel workers should be protesting LA’s plan to force active hotels to become homeless shelters
The latest disturbing story from the annals of Homelessness in California is a report from the L.A. Grand Hotel that the hotel’s management disciplined a housekeeper because she spoke up in a staff meeting about concerns for her safety after interactions with the homeless guests.
Project Roomkey was supposed to be temporary, but in January the city of Los Angeles signed another contract extension. In June, the city dropped its contract with the services provider, the Salvation Army, which laid off 91 people working at the facility. Now the Grand is part of Mayor Karen Bass’s “Inside Safe” program.
These are not normal working conditions. The business travelers and tourists have been replaced by people who need more than turndown service. Also unbelievable: the union that represents Fajardo and other hotel workers, Unite Here Local 11, is the proponent of a ballot measure that would turn unbooked rooms in every hotel in the city of Los Angeles into homeless housing every night.
The hotel owners’ Coordinated Bargaining Group has filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the National Labor Relations Board over these unusual demands, which the hotels say will harm the Los Angeles tourism industry and which are unrelated to their employees.
