A hospital worker who disarmed a man brandishing an imitation gun at an A&E has been presented with a medal for bravery
Security officer Dean Priestley, 41, was called to the Bradford Royal Infirmary’s X-ray area where the armed man was pointing the weapon at a porter and demanding to be seen.Mr Priestley, a former volunteer in the Army Reserves, did not know the gun was a replica at the time and approached the man.
He calmly asked him to hand over the gun, which he did and sat and talked with him until the police arrived. The 27-year-old man later pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation firearm, a gas-powered BB gun, with intent to cause fear of violence. He received a prison sentence, a spokesperson for the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said.
Mr Priestley, a father of two, said he was “humbled and a little embarrassed” to be receiving the award, adding he was “a million more times nervous” thinking about going to collect the medal.
