Following days of protests and street clashes, Hong Kong's chief executive is prepared to suspend a controversial bill Saturday that would allow extraditions to mainland China, according to the city leader's advisers.
Charles Ventura, Doug Stanglin and Elizabeth LawrenceFollowing days of protests and street clashes, Hong Kong's chief suspended a controversial bill indefinitely on Saturday that would allow extraditions to mainland China.
The contentious bill raised concerns among critics that it would be used to undermine the city's civil liberties by making political activists and human rights activists subject to removal. Organizers said more than a million people had taken to the streets since demonstrators erupted on Sunday. Lam, chosen by Beijing to be the highest-level local official, is caught between her Communist Party bosses and a public anxious to protect the liberties they enjoy as a former British colony. She was facing calls from both outside and within her government to delay the extradition legislation that has spurred the protests.
