Toreros safety Joshua Hong once quit the football team at USD, but he's back and making the most of his chances as a 23-year-old senior
University of San Diego safety Joshua Hong was credited with one tackle during his 2018 freshman season. The following spring he suffered a hip injury. That fall he quit the team.
“One thing my dad always instilled in my brother and I is if you start something you have to finish it,” he said. He hesitated to break on the play the first time. The second time, there was no hesitation. He cut in font of the receiver, picked off the pass and there was nothing but green grass between him and the end zone.He didn’t stop running until he reached the end zone, where he turned around and was greeted by celebrating teammates running to mob him.
He rattled off Nick Murray breaking up three passes against Drake. “He should have been credited with 10,” said Hong. He mentioned Hunter Nichol’s kickoff return for a TD against Drake and Deshaun Harvey intercepting the first pass of his career against Laverne, the same game Hong intercepted his first pass.
Hong grew up in Las Vegas and was captain of the football and basketball teams at Faith Lutheran his senior year, earning all-state honors as a cornerback.
