As CGI replaces live animals, Eli the chimpanzee — whose résumé includes a TBS show and a One Direction video — retired last year but has yet to find a long-term facility
A still from 'The Last Chimpanzee' showing Eli on the set of 'Zero.' As the chimp reached adolescence and had more outbursts, he worked on a greenscreen away from human actors.
Having been let go by Working Wildlife , he was dropped off in March at a financially struggling nonprofit sanctuary near Angeles National Forest, just outside of Los Angeles. The facility shut down in August, and Eli and more than 40 other chimps, many of whom arrived from research labs, have since been under the on-site care of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
A mix of factors accounts for the shift, including the adoption of believable CGI as well as high-profile credibility issues involving the industry's on-set animal watchdog, the American Humane Association. Arguably the strongest influence has been a relentless pressure campaign by animal-rights activists. "They made it happen," observes Barbara Casey, the head of another industry regulator, Movie Animals Protected.
At least, there are zero with Hollywood training. Productions willing to risk the ire of activists can still secure chimps from several private companies around the country that teach them circus-style tricks. These include Chance, who appeared opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in 2013'sTo conceptual artist Alex Israel, whose practice often probes the mechanics of the entertainment business, including its props and sets, Eli represents the end of an era.

Hungover Man Horrified To Learn He Made Dozens Of Plans Last NightNEW YORK—Following an evening of heavy drinking at local bar McGuire’s Tavern, 32-year-old Peter Larsen reportedly awoke with a hangover Wednesday and was horrified to discover he had made dozens of plans the previous night. “Oh, God, I can’t believe I said I’d get lunch with Emily and told Scott that I’d hang out next weekend,” said Larsen, rubbing his temples and lamenting that he never should have let himself get so out of control and recklessly commit to numerous social obligations. “I just hope I didn’t say anything stupid to someone from work about how I’d love to catch the new Fantastic Four with them when it comes out. It’s bad enough that I kept going on and on to Jeff about going on a camping trip together in August.” At press time, Larsen had reportedly resolved that in the future, he would stop drinking as soon as he noticed himself beginning to talk loudly about going in together on a beach house rental on Long Island.
