Historically segregated school to be national park site in Marfa
A vintage class photo of students from Blackwell School hangs on the wall in the only remaining school building in Marfa on Nov. 9, 2020. The school was open from 1909 until 1965, when it was shuttered during nationwide court-ordered desegregation.Out west, in Marfa, one of the last remaining Mexican-American segregated schools will become one of the first national park sites dedicated to modern Latino history.
Mario Rivera is a Blackwell School alumnus and a founding board member of the Blackwell School Alliance. In 2020, former Texas Congressmen Will Hurd, a Republican, and Filemon Vela, a Democrat, introduced the legislation. Then last year, Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn, Democratic California Sen. Alex Padilla and Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales — who represents District 23 just outside San Antonio — continued to carry the bill.
Years after the school shut down, the Blackwell School Alliance, along with the National Parks Conservation Association, worked to commemorate the site for its history and culture, and honor the stories passed through generations. Now, through this legislation, these organizations and other advocates see a way to better understand American history and raise awareness in Texas.
