More than 70 buildings and events will be open for free
Historic buildings across Nottinghamshire - amongst them some that don't normally have public access - will be opening the doors for free later this month. Heritage Open Days returns, England's biggest community-led festival of history and culture, was first founded in 1994.
This event is part of New Wave, a series of innovative youth-led events being produced this year. New Wave is a project by Heritage Open Days, which is presented by the National Trust and supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Nottinghamshire Gardens Trust and the Friends of Wollaton Park Walled Garden Project will be on-site to show visitors the restoration in progress of Nottingham’s oldest and largest walled kitchen garden. Lots to see, including a restored Cucumber House, unusual heated walls, bothies and a head gardener’s cottage.
It is approximately 135,000sq ft in area spread over seven floors. Many of the original features are retained in it. The restoration was a catalyst for the regeneration of the Lace Market. The building is listed as grade II*. One notable feature is the number of staircases that it has which are all different. The guide for the event has been involved with the building for over 25 years.Address: Nottingham College, Stoney Street, Nottingham, NG1 1NGThe Breach House One of D. H.
National Justice Museum Trial re-enactments in the Victorian Criminal Courtroom are one of the highlights of a paid museum ticket but for Heritage Open Days, the museum will be opening one of its rarely seen spaces to the public – the beautiful Civil Courtroom – for a family-friendly mock trial.
