Free first-episode screening of historic Arlington Black community documentary scheduled for Oct. 18 at UT Arlington
The Hill, a five-block area of Arlington, was the only historic addition platted specifically for African Americans. The five-part series examines residents’ lives after emancipation and into the era of Jim Crow laws.
A 6 p.m. public reception precedes the screening, and attendees are encouraged to participate in a panel discussion after the show. The episode features interviews with residents who lived in The Hill, as well as photos, maps and documents. Contributors include the Rev. Carl Pointer, Bob Ray Sanders, Randy Parker, Bertha Jones, Geraldine Mills, Beverly Jackson and scholars scholars Gene B. Preuss and W. Marvin Dulaney. Topics range from segregation to influential church and business leaders in the area to the vibrant night life in The Hill.
