A 27-year-old man hiking with friends on El Capitan Trail in Lakeside died Sunday evening after complaining of feeling hot, tired and thirsty and then collapsing on the trail, a fire official said.
Emergency crews were called to the trail off Blue Sky Ranch Road around 6:30 p.m. by the man’s friends, who called 911 after he fell unconscious, Lakeside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jeremy Davis said.Advertisement When firefighters arrived, they initially requested a helicopter but ended up canceling it. Crews did CPR on the man for about 40 minutes but he could not be revived. After the crews communicated with hospital staff, the man was pronounced dead around 7:10 p.m., Davis said.
First-responders believe the man suffered from heat exhaustion and possible dehydration, Davis said. The name of the man was not released.
