Expressing thanks to religious institutions throughout Highland Park for their role offering help through prayer vigils after the parade shooting, Mayor Nancy Rotering said a community vigil will be held soon.
Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering speaks with the media at the end of Central Avenue following the July 4 mass shooting on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 in Highland Park.
Rotering made her plans known in an email to the community Wednesday, offering residents a vision of hope while recognizing a communal recovery from the mass shooting at the city’s Fourth of July parade will take time.“There is no road map that tells us what to do next, but we cannot allow this shooting to define us,” Rotering said in the email. “Today as we begin a new day — we do so with a renewed sense of resolve and purpose.
“We will reopen the area as soon as we receive clearance from federal authorities,” she said. “We know this situation is difficult and we appreciate your patience. Please continue to avoid the secure perimeter.” In her email, Rotering said healing needs to be a community wide effort. Each resident has a role which can include well-being checks on neighbors, and remembering everyone was touched by the mass shooting in some way. The city’s website will have the most up-to-date information.
