But for Terence Downey, a sophomore at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, a PR was unlikely without something much larger: a heart procedure. or an abnormally rapid heartbeat, and it was causing running to become increasingly difficult. Although he was born with the condition—which was caused by an extra nerve in his heart—it was not diagnosed until last January.
With Downey’s increasing training and passion for the sport, getting the procedure—called a catheter ablation—became a necessary next step to be able to run and for a higher quality of life down the road. With the procedure, doctors would deaden the extra nerve with heat energy, which would allow his heart to beat at a normal rate.
