The Rick and Morty and High On Life creator Justin Roiland awaits trial on domestic violence charges.
and Rick and Morty creator through the Orange County Superior Court in California, Roiland has been charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit.The charges relate to a criminal complaint filed in 2020 by an anonymous woman who was dating Roiland at the time. Roiland was reportedly arrested in May 2020 and released on a $50,000 bond in August 2020, and arraigned in October of that year.
Roiland pleaded not guilty in 2020 but appeared in court on Thursday for a pre-trial hearing. According to NBC News, the case has been the subject of over a dozen court hearings, including pre-trial hearings, though a trial has not been set. "We look forward to clearing Justin's name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible," Roiland's attorney, T. Edward Welbourn, said in a statement.
A protective order was also filed in 2020 against Roiland, instructing him not to harass, threaten, or surveil the person named in the order. He can also not go within 100 feet of the person and has been ordered to turn in any firearms he owns. This order is in place until October 2023.
