Clayton Kershaw would rather retire than break down again. Except he believes he won’t. He'd rather walk away than be reduced to mediocrity. Except he believes that won’t happen. When Kershaw pictures next year, he imagines himself pitching. But where?
Eleven years after pitching in his first All-Star Game, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw will be able to enjoy the event through his new eyes. The lockout afforded Kershaw the opportunity to delay the decision of whether to re-sign with the Dodgers or move to the Rangers, who play within driving distance of his offseason home in suburban Dallas.
“I don’t want to be hurt,” he said. “It’s just a horrible feeling. You just feel useless. You feel like you’re in the way. I don’t want to deal with that anymore. So if I felt like I was going to get hurt all the time, I don’t want to do that anymore.”From left: Dodgers’ Joey Gallo, Craig Kimbrel, Max Muncy, Chris Taylor and Clayton Kershaw celebrate in the locker room after clinching the NL West on Sept. 13 in Phoenix.
The last time Kershaw made 30 or more starts in a season was seven years ago. His persistent back problems resulted in him being placed on the injured list twice this season. However, he added, “I can manage it, definitely, and maybe there’s a time where it can last for eight months of the year and be good. I still think that’s in there.”
Regarding performance, Kershaw said, “I also don’t want to be mediocre. I want to be good at what I do. I don’t want to hang on just to pitch.” He certainly isn’t just hanging on this year, pitching well enough to be one of two locks for the Dodgers’ postseason rotation, the other being Cy Young Award contender
