The fund’s first priorities will be vital restoration work for two much-photographed landmarks in the Tenterden town conservation area built in 1903 and 1895, mainly wooden structures which are crumbling away and showing signs of significant decay. The weather-boarded Tenterden Town station building and the former Chilham signal box are described by the K&ESR as ‘jewels in the crown of both the railway and the Weald’.
He said: “Together with the railway’s locomotives and carriages, these buildings help create an immersive experience of the rural light railway and a bygone era which delights tens of thousands of visitors every year. Their preservation is essential if we are to not only safeguard the living history they hold but also ensure that we are looking ahead to the future and our reconnection to the main rail network through Robertsbridge.
The wooden canopy provides shelter on the platform, and the transformed waiting room now houses the gift shop. The former Chilham signal box was originally constructed in 1895 as an integral part of the South Eastern Railway's signalling system.
