an antitrust law that prevented movie studios at the time from having complete control over Hollywood, the Justice Department would update a decades-old provision that it believes has outlived not only how films are distributed, but how people watch them., the landmark 1949 Supreme Court decision said production studios were not allowed to own their own theaters, as well as not being able to set minimum ticket prices or control when and how their movies were screened.

The law also prevented studios from “block booking,” the practice of forcing theaters to show a production studio’s best films along with its more mediocre fare⁠—or not screen any at all. in November 2018, it is expected to file a motion to terminate the law in the coming days., from a time when most towns had a single screen theater and films weren’t shown on television or produced by Netflix and other streamers.

Smaller theaters could suffer from the law’s cancellation, having previously said they cannot afford distribution agreements for large blockbuster films⁠—and if block booking becomes legal again, those operators would be even more vulnerable.
