The FAA ruled against it, saying it would've been an obstruction for planes flying into Stinson Municipal Airport and for helicopters transporting patients to Methodist Hospital.
Nearly six years ago, an anonymous developer requested the Federal Aviation Administration perform a survey of the property that currently serves as CPS Energy's. The property is just south of Lone Star Brewery. The Ferris wheel, 900 feet tall, would have been the tallest thing in the San Antonio skyline.
The Ferris wheel also would have dwarfed other famous Ferris wheels, including the current record-holder, the Ain Dubai, which is 820 feet tall.for planes flying into Stinson Municipal Airport and for helicopters transporting patients to Methodist hospital. However, although the FAA ruled against the construction, the administration does not have the power to enforce its rulings.
"By law, developers must give the FAA the opportunity to evaluate proposed structures near airports to determine whether they could pose a hazard to aircraft or interfere with navigation aids," Rick Breitenfeldt, public affairs specialist with the FAA, wrote in an email."Our determinations are recommendations and building decisions are up to local governments.
However, many local governments and states have laws that prohibit issuing building permits if the FAA determines a structure would pose a hazard that could not be mitigated, Breitenfeldt said. San Antonio does not appear to be one of these localities, however, and nothing exists in current building code to indicate such status.
