Caltrans, other transportation agencies across the country and the California Highway Patrol use the same system.
In Hawthorne, markings have been painted near the curb on some streets, between which drivers who are parking must place their vehicles. Failing to do this may result in them returning to their cars to find citations for a “Designated Stall Violation.” Of course, a lot of drivers from Hawthorne – and especially those from other cities – would not have heard about this law and would not think about looking at the ground to check for stall markings.
Some motorists were parking curbside inefficiently, taking up too much room so another car couldn’t fit in. The law, which focuses on residential areas, in part is meant to reduce the number of people having to park a block or two from home. In neighborhoods where the city’s law is in play, T-shaped markings are put on the street so drivers know where to pull in. Romero said it isn’t like law enforcement is going out with rulers and citing a violator for being six inches over the line – it is after those not coming close to hitting the mark: “These are blatant.”When the T markings are added to a neighborhood, the city tries to spread the word. Then there will be a 72-hour grace period before enforcement begins.
Romero said those who are cited are welcome to appeal the tickets, and those who law enforcement determines just didn’t know the law will often get the violation dismissed. What if an offender had been cited before and still played that card? Well, the city has access to a database that shows if a vehicle was previously cited, Romero said.
