Here's what teachers need this fall:
For many classroom teachers, the rules for school in the midst of this storm have changed since last year, but the bottom line has not— many teachers are on their own. When the pandemic first hit, there was an absence of direction from state and federal authorities; now there is plenty of guidance, even commands, from state and federal authorities , but so much of it is contradictory or wildly misguided that, as was the case last year, teachers are left to sort things out on their own.
This fall will reveal the quality of leadership in school district’s across the country. Many are already failing the test. What don’t teachers need this fall? They don’t need trinkets and empty attaboys. They don’t need speeches that try to pump them up by minimizing the challenges they face, a suggestion that this is all just a walk in the park through a light shower. They don’t need to hear “You’ve got this,” especially when what it really means is “You’ll have to get this on your own.
