Only days to the deadline for a new federal budget, U.S. lawmakers are once again scrambling to avoid a government shutdown that could affect a long list of programs in New Jersey.
The 64 members of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, co-chaired by Gottheimer and Republican Pennsylvania Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, endorsed a framework last week to avoid a government shutdown. Congress has been here many times before — the most recent shutdown occurred in December 2018 and lasted about a month under former President Donald Trump — but budget standoffs have become more alarming in recent years amid growing partisan hostility in America.
Republican hardliners in the House are demanding steep cuts to many of these programs, and a prolonged government shutdown could have a significant impact on these services.
