There are around 12.3 million women-owned businesses in the US, and the vast majority of them are small businesses. Four out of 10 business owners are women, up from 4.6% in 1972 when the US Census started keeping track of the sex of business owners. Revenues by women-owned firms in that period increased from $8.1 billion to $1.8 trillion, according to analysis from American Express.
