Now is not the time for cis men to worry about taking up too much space.

There’s even research suggesting that when it comes to “gendered” issues like abortion rights, some cis men might be more likely to listen to other men than to women: In a 2020 study in the, some men were shown a message about the importance of the movement that was attributed to a woman. If they skipped it, they saw a similar message coming from either another woman or a man. Support for the movement decreased if they heard from the woman but increased if they heard from the man.

, a professor of political science at Brown University, tells SELF that they do suggest that cis men hearing about the importance of abortion rights from other men could influence how they view the issues—and potentially whether or not they take action.Events like rallies, marches, and protests are one obvious way men can use their bodies to stand up for abortion rights and protect people who can get pregnant.

Kelly adds that when it comes to putting their bodies on the line, the number one thing cis men can do is to have sex responsibly and aid in preventing unwanted pregnancies; this includes and considering vasectomies. Without unwanted pregnancies, she points out, abortions wouldn’t be necessary, so men should be doing everything they can to avoid putting pregnant people at risk.
