Around the office, concerned queries rise in almost every conversation. "Does touching your hair count? I do that all the time," one person wonders. Another, who wears glasses, is perturbed: "I'll just touch around my nose and cheeks for no reason at all.
But what's the solution? Dermatologists must be feeling pretty annoyed right now. Advising people not to touch their faces has actually been their thing for a while. NYC dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry says, "Dermatologists have always recommended avoiding touching one’s face, because in addition to potentially spreading infectious diseases like the coronavirus, you are transferring dirt, oil, debris, and bacteria to your face from your hands.
Sick of having The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face" in my head constantly, I check in with the CDC. What did they actually say? "Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth," reads. I suppose that's better than a wholesale "Don't touch your face," but it's still a challenge.
