, Schreck, who already won an Obie for her work, was up for both best play and best actress. “I cried when I received both nominations, which is not surprising because I'm a frequent Greek tragedy-sized crier,” joked Schreck. “After 30 years of loving and devoting my life to the theater, often for very little remuneration, I was ecstatic to be honored in this way.”
The big night called for full glam and a stunning column gown by Prada. Still, posing for the paparazzi was admittedly slightly daunting. “Honestly, when I stepped onto the red carpet and the photographers began screaming ‘Look here! Look here!’ I felt like it was 80 AD and I was about to be devoured by lions in the Roman Forum,” she said.
Though step and repeats might not be Schreck’s most beloved backdrop, in the end it was all worthwhile. “The highlight of the night for me was Rachel Chavkin winning best director of a musical for Hadestown,” says Schreck. “The brilliant speech she gave in which she pointed out that a field whose job it is to imagine has suffered a failure of imagination when it comes to creating a Broadway that actually looks like America.
