Darren Ferguson says his XL Bully pup Lola has been his 'rock' after struggling with the death of his wife Kelly to breast cancer
The owner of an XL Bully dog says it is "no life for a dog" after it was announced the breed will soon be banned. Heartbroken Darren Ferguson describes his pup Lola as a "gentle giant".
The 49-year-old, who is from Dormanstown in Teesside, said: "When my wife passed away in November 2021 I was by myself. I tried to take my own life a couple of times as nobody was around me and I felt stuck. Darren - who is suffering from a spinal tumour himself - believes if it wasn't for the 38-and-a-half kilo pup he may not be here. He said: "She's given me a purpose to wake up on a morning. I'm not perfect still but if she wasn't about I might not be here now.Darren's fears for his pooch come after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the decision to ban the breed "wasn't about a handful of badly trained dogs" but a pattern of behaviour that "cannot go on.
However, Darren believes the attacks are down to how the dogs are raised and feels like his beloved Lola is being persecuted along with thousands of other innocent dogs. He said: "Lola's very friendly on walks she wants to be greeted and petted by everybody. She's an attention seeker and loves everybody. Her size probably does scare a lot of people but she just wants to be fussed.
