Kevin Burkhardt’s unlikely path took him from selling Malibus in New Jersey to the biggest game in football, with a long stop in a spot where anything can happen: the New York Mets.

“When we were listening to games, I closed my eyes, and if you listen really close, he has a lot of Al Michaels in the tone of his voice,” says Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks. “His intonations, his cadence and there was something that already had this built-in big-game sound.” “You have to be prepared every day,” said the veteran broadcaster Gary Cohen, who has called Mets games since 1989 and has been the voice of the team on SNY since 2006. “Over the course of six months, 162 games, there are dozens and dozens and dozens of story lines that you have to follow on an everyday basis. And you never know what twists and turns the season is going to take.”
“When you’re doing the team every day of the year, sometimes the stories aren’t there. You’ve got to dig and dig and dig,” said Burkhardt, who entertained viewers by doing things like working with the Citi Field grounds crew. “There were days where it was difficult to find the entertaining things.” So when Burkhardt was asked whether life along the first-base line taught him to stay on his toes, he was unequivocal: “Yes is the answer,” he said. “Bold letters, yes.”Photo:Somehow the next several years of Burkhardt’s tenure brought the sort of relentless drama that only the Mets could conjure. In 2008, they bizarrely fired manager Willie Randolph in the middle of the night during a road trip in Anaheim after winning a game.
