And the director of Houston's well-known band says they're once again going through a renaissance, taking a bigger national stage.
"People are starting to see the value of marching bands, starting to see the value of not only entertainment but marketing, branding, and the little nuances that HBCU marching bands bring to the table that no other entity can,” said Brian Simmons, director of Texas Southern's Ocean of Soul.
“There’s nothing more important to me than seeing a student graduate,” Zachery said. “There’s no show, no drill, no applause that is worth that particular thing for me and I think that is the cornerstone of what we do: to have people in masses with a singular thought and using that particular thought process to get them to the finish line.”HBCU band culture at Prairie View A&M University will be on full display in the CW's newest docu-series,"March" airing Monday, Jan.
In 1967, Grambling State was the first HBCU to play in the Super Bowl. Since then, the bands have faded in and out of national attention all while remaining integral to their universities and to Black culture.Recently, Prairie View A&M became the subject of a new CW docu-series called ‘
