Tasha Kahele started making calls last week, and by the weekend, collected 60,000 pounds of items to donate.

. Fires destroyed the historic town of Lahaina and scorched more than 2,000 acres, leaving thousands of residents without homes.

She messaged her family group text and called local Hawaiian churches and Pacific Islander organizations. Within a few hours, she secured donated shipping container space to send relief items home. Tasha Kahele organized a donation event on Friday at the Tikahtnu Commons to provide supplies for families in Maui that have been affected by the wildfires. “People are just coming by, it’s literally a drive-through,” said Anchorage resident Olani Saunoa, who directs purchasing for U.S. Foods, a wholesale food company. “People are dropping off clothes and food and diapers and more water. Everybody’s just showing up in spurts, it’s nice.

Olani Saunoa, the director of replenishment for U.S. Foods, sorts and packs donated clothing into boxes for families in Hawaii that are affected by the Maui wildfires. Saunoa said that U.S. Foods delivered eight pallettes of water and 18 cases of spam to the donation event Friday afternoon.
