Have Dallas County courts gotten the felony backlog under control? | Opinion
Just before COVID-19 forced the justice system to nearly grind to a halt, there were about 14,000 active pending felony cases in Dallas County. By the end of April last year, however, that number had swelled more than 40% to 20,429.
The judges fired back saying they weren’t in control of all the factors leading to the logjams. In September, 14 of the 17 judges signed an 11-page letter to commissioners defending themselves and suggesting ways they could work with other stakeholders to tackle the problem. One suggestion with promise was to develop a judicial management plan that would place time constraints on closing cases.
It’s obvious they’ve stepped up their efforts. In the year ending April 30, they had cleared 40,338 cases, up from 30,134 in the prior 12 months. Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot told us that’s because his office, too, is still catching up from the pandemic. As for that judicial management plan, he told us he’s yet to be contacted by any county official about its creation. And he said he’s growing increasingly concerned about the ongoing backlog as witnesses and victims are held at bay.
