Tennis standout will be the No. 1 seed when the CIF individual tournament starts next week throughout San Diego
Rohan Murali stands 5 feet 5 inches tall. Asked how much he weighs, initially Murali said he checks in at 120 pounds. Then he bumped it up to 125.
The boys’ 2020 season was canceled because of COVID-19, although Murali said he wasn’t planning to play as a freshman anyway. Murali lives in Mission Valley but attends Santana because of the school’s excellent engineering and medical programs. He focused on the academic transition as a freshman. When Santana beat Eastlake 10-8 in the semifinals, Murali was on the edge of the court, applauding and high-fiving teammate Kaj Salzano during the match that clinched the win for the Sultans.
In 2021, Murali, then just 16, won two matches in the Easter Bowl 18s, which draws an international junior field. He lost in three sets in the third round to No. 1 seed Jerry Shang, who went on to win the tournament.In 2022, Murali won two qualifying matches to advance to the Australian Open Junior Championships, where he lost in the first round.
Adamson said Murali makes up for his modest size with three main factors: his recognition and anticipation of shots, plus excellent timing on his strokes.
