Harrisburg officials said Friday, July 7, 2023, that the city has agreed to pay for renovations at FNB Field, which it owns, to keep the Harrisburg Senators Minor League Baseball team on City Island. Maisel said the city will be reimbursed for the cost from a $6 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The remainder of the money for the $11 million to $12 million project will come from fees and dues the team pays to the city. The locker room area also will be expanded “to accommodate the growing number of female coaches and umpires in professional baseball.”
The Senators have been affiliated with the Nationals since 1991. Previously the team was a AA affiliate to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The current Player Development Contract, city officials said, runs through the 2030 season.“We are thrilled that the City of Harrisburg has formally decided to fund the improvements necessary to bring FNB Field in-line with the new Major League Baseball facility requirements,” said Kevin Kulp, Harrisburg Senators president, in a news release.
