Harris County, which undertakes an enormous amount of construction projects on roads, bridges and other infrastructure annually, will begin requiring contractors to provide and pay for safety training for their employees working on county projects.

The new policy will require workers on county projects to receive federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety training. Workers must be compensated for the cost of the training and for the time spent completing it. The new policy will apply to county projects that are put out for bid after March 1 and does not impact extensions or renewals of contracts already in place before that date.Contractors found to have violated the requirements could be denied county contracts in the future.
