While over 105,000 children in Harris County have working parents and need child care,\u00a0only around 9,400 high quality slots are available.
The Early REACH program, Harris County's new child care initiative, will target some of those parents who are still out of the workforce, Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones said.
The ARPA funding will cover the cost for three years. After that, the future of the child care subsidy program is uncertain. "We're set up to make it work, then we can make a strong case that it's worthy of additional investment," Hidalgo said. State legislators considered a $2.3 billion funding proposal that would have continued the ARPA-funded grant program TWC administered, Feigen said.
"When you go into a lot of high quality child care programs in our state, you'll notice there's a classroom or two that's empty. And it's not because there isn't demand," Feigen said.
