Nokia and her friends, who took on the name House of Mofongo a few years ago, grew up voguing all around New York City: at the Christopher Street Pier, in Washington Square Park, or at the raves and house parties of friends.
New York City’s historic ballroom scene—in which different houses compete among each other in a number of categories from “realness” to “runway”—has reached mass cultural heights thanks to the likes of the FX series. Nokia has deep roots in this subculture. Her House of Mofongo is a so-called cha cha house, which means its members do not directly compete in voguing contests but rather celebrate ballroom culture while training and supporting younger dancers and artists.
The new video was filmed in a Harlem ballroom. It references not only the voguing culture of New York City, but also 1960s-era Puerto Rican beauty pageants—the kind her mother participated in as a young girl. The clip starts off with Nokia in an Aaliyah-inspired red and black motorcycle outfit by the brand I.AM.GIA. A delicate periwinkle lingerie garment from Victoria’s Secret soon follows, which Nokia wears with faux diamond costume jewelry fit for a real showgirl.
There are subtle tributes to some of Nokia’s earlier obsessions, too, such as the diamond-encrusted appliqué outfit she wears during her dance number, a reference to Debra Paget’s snake dance in the 1959 film. “I really wanted to recreate that—it’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a little girl," Nokia said.
The clip features many of Nokia’s family and friends, including her godmother, who acts as the reigning pageant queen, and her best friend of 14 years, Gigi Concrete, as well as Concrete’s daughter . “We encourage her to vogue and to be a singer and an artist and just be fabulous, really,” Nokia says of the girl. That uplifting message also sums up the point of the video.
